Every method of removing hair does one of three things: it cuts the hair at the skin, it pulls it out from the root, or it dissolves the shaft chemically. Everything else — the number of attachments, the charging case, the colour — is packaging around one of those three actions. Knowing which one a device performs tells you most of what you need before you compare two boxes on a shelf.
Cutting is what razors and trimmers do. It is painless, it takes minutes, and the hair is visible again within a day or two. Pulling is what waxing and epilators do: it hurts more and lasts two to four weeks, because the hair has to grow back from the follicle. Creams sit in between — no blade and no pulling, but an alkaline chemistry that not every skin tolerates. None of the three changes how your hair grows, and no device sold for home use can.
A trimmer shears hair between two blades that never touch the skin, which is why it cannot nick and why it leaves a fraction of a millimetre behind. That fraction is exactly what makes it the safer choice on the bikini line, the underarms and anywhere the skin folds. A razor cuts flush and gives a smoother finish, at the cost of a higher chance of ingrown hairs on coarse or curly hair. Many people end up using both: a trimmer to take the length down, a razor only where they want it truly smooth.
Heat works by breaking the weak hydrogen bonds inside the hair shaft and letting them re-form as the hair cools. Damage starts when the temperature climbs high enough to affect the stronger disulphide bonds — measurably from about 150 °C, and sharply above 180 °C. Fine or coloured hair does best at the lowest setting; coarse hair can take more, but on a single slow pass rather than four fast ones. A tool that offers 230 °C offers it because the number sells, not because hair needs it.
Whatever you use, the skin barrier is briefly thinner for a day or two afterwards. That is the window in which most irritation happens, and the fix is dull: warm water for two or three minutes before you start, no pressure on the blade, a plain fragrance-free moisturiser after, and no acids, retinoids or strong fragrance for forty-eight hours. Exfoliate between sessions rather than on the day, and if bumps appear, leave them alone — tweezing an ingrown hair turns a small inflamed follicle into a mark that lasts months.
